---------------------------------------------
It was friday evening and I was getting ready to go out with my 3 best friends. We had some celebrating to do. I had been told earlier in the day that I had been promoted. And it wasn't just any old promotion. I was moving to Los Angeles to work at the company's West Coast division in North America. It mean't more responsibility, more hours and a much higher salery.
You might wonder what it is that I do. Well, I work for an online entertainment website, which mostly focuses on television and movies. I used write for the European side of it, covering premieres in London and stuff like that, which made it possible for me to live in my home country of Denmark. But now I was moving to L.A. The head office. This was what I'd always dreamed about. I only feared that I would get stuck writing gossip pieces. Not that I don't like the gossip pieces. I mean I'm as guilty as anyone in being curious about the rich and the famous. If I wasn't, I would have applied for a job at a "real" news website or newspaper. But as it were, my interests have always been about movies, television and music, so really this was my dream job. I was only hoping I'd get to do interviews, on set reports and perhaps even some events, but not gossip.
Anyway, back to that friday. As soon as I had recieved the good news, I'd called up my friends to ask if they wanted to go celebrate with me. Thankfully they were all free. It had been what felt like a thousand years since we'd last had a real girls' night out. Of the four of us, I was the only one still single. Two of the girls were married, one even had a kid, and the third one was engaged to be married. So nights out on the town were few and far between for the four of us.
The last think I needed to do was my hair. For some reason that's always the last thing I do before leaving my house, mostly because my hair is fine, long, blonde and straight, making it almost impossible to do anything interesting with, unless I want to spend hours on it, or pay a professional to do it, which I don't. So i ended up doing a quick updo, with a few strands hanging down and framing my face.
Having finished with my hair I grabbed my keys and jacket, and left the house. I lived downtown, so I could walk to where I was meeting the girls. I reached the door to Froggy's and saw Anna and Christina standing out from waiting. When they saw me approaching, they both let out a squeal started running, as best they could in their heels, toward me. I let out a squeal myself, and all three of us hugged like we hadn't seen eachother in years instead of a couple of weeks.
"Oh my god! It's been forever since we've done this and I am so ready to party!" Christina exclaimed as a greeting. She's the one with the kid.
"Good thing Mark volunteered to stay home with Thomas," I said laughing.
"I don't think she gave him a choice, " Anna said, "It was either that or no more poker nights and nookie for at least 3 months." She chuckled.
"Well I had to do something to get him to agree!" Chris said.
"Knowing Mark, I'm pretty sure you just had to ask." I laughed at her.
"What would be the fun in that?" She asked looking as if the mere concept of asking was beyond her.
All three of us burst out laughing again. When we finally calmed down I realized we were missing someone. I looked at the others,
" Where's Maria?"
Chris rolled her eyes, but not out of any real annoyance,
"Where do you think?"
"Late again?" I asked. Chris nodded. See, much as I love Maria, I mean I've known her since I was 3 years old, she has this annoying habit of always being late.
*************
30 minutes later all four of us were seated at a table inside Froggy's (cafe by day, bar by night) enjoying our beers. We had been talking non stop since we got there, having tons of stuff to tell each other, but finally after hearing how everyone had been doing for the last couple of weeks and seeing pictures of Chris' son, the subject turned to my upcoming move across the Atlantic.
"So when are you leaving again?" Maria asked. She was the only one I hadn't told all the details to, as she had been at work when I called and I had caught her just a few seconds before there was an emergency wirh one of her patients.
"Two weeks from today." I told her.
"That soon? Wow, they didn't give you a lot of time to prepare did they?"
"Nope, but they need me there as quickly as possible." I said with a huge smile on my face.
" But, you don't have a place to live or anything."
"Well, I'm gonna stay at the hotel for the first month, the company's footing the bill, until I find a place. And all I really need to get any work done is my laptop and an internet connection."
"I still can't believe you're moving halfway around the world." Anna said.
"I know!" I said, "But you'll all come visit, and I'll come home for holidays and all that stuff. It won't that much different from when I lived in Spain."
"We know, but still, it only took 3 and a half hours to fly to Spain, and L.A. is 11 hours not including any possible layovers." Chris said.
"Alright!" I said, getting up from the table, "Enough with the sad faces! Who wants Piņa Coladas? On me of course!"
I got the drinks and we spent the rest of the night drinking, laughing and flirting with random guys. I didn't get home until 5 o'clock in the morning. |
